This month we would like to spotlight Pinjarra Bakery, a fast-growing family business attracting attention for their great fresh food and vibrant presence.
Tell us about Pinjarra Bakery? We didn’t start out as pie maker or bakers - but our Italian roots have long inspired a love of food and coming together as a family.
The bakery was founded in the mid 90’s when mum and dad (Larry & Narda Pantaleo) decided to start producing a small selection of specialty baked goods within their existing fresh food mart business.
The bakery component of the business became so successful they decided to move next door into an independent bricks and mortar store. In 1997, Pinjarra Bakery & Patisserie was born. Local support was tremendous, and people came from around the Murray and South West to taste the superbly prepared bread, cakes and pies.
Our earliest entries within industry baking competitions were triumphant.
After 10 years of operation and with three adult kids in tow, we finally moved into a brand-new, purpose-built flagship store in Pinjarra.
Building on this success, not long after we celebrated the opening of our second store in Waroona, and in 2014, Maddington.
Our signature pies are what we are known for. They are distinctive and unique, crammed to the brim with tasty fillings you can see and flavour combinations that have become crowd favourites. Together with our 80-strong team, we’ve been rolling out award-winning goodness for more than 23 years. We’re proud of what we’ve achieved and stand by our belief in creating simple, feel-good food to be enjoyed.
What do BHR Papalia do for you?
We have been clients of BHR Papalia since 1976, when Joe Papalia was the original owner.
Since Brian Hotker took over, the team have been looking after all our financials. This includes preparing tax returns, BAS statements, taxation related matters, managing our super fund and general business advisement.
Brian is a long-time friend. The whole team at BHR Papalia have always been exceptionally helpful and always offer amazing support and advice.
What are some of the highlights of the past year for Pinjarra Bakery?
Gosh there have been so many. It’s been a massive year!
In the past 12 months we have re-branded, and are now known just as Pinjarra Bakery. We opened up our distribution centre to take on wholesale partners, and collaborated with a local coffee roaster to produce our own signature “Bakers Blend”. Our fourth store in Port Kennedy has been busy in construction phase and is almost complete - we hope to open in early November. To top it all off, we recently celebrated our most successful awards season ever, taking out a major industry award at the Great Aussie Pie competition!
So you've won the best meat pie in Australia award - can you tell us all about that?
It’s been an absolute whirlwind since the award was announced last month.
After taking out the Most Successful Exhibitor Award at both the BIEAWA (Baking Industry Awards) and Perth Royal Show earlier this year, we hoped to finish the year off with a bang at the annual Great Aussie Pie Competition, but we were completely blown away by the results.
We know our pies are the real deal, but to beat thousands of entries from incredible bakeries across Australia and come out on top - that’s no mean feat. It’s definitely the pinnacle of our career, and has been 20 years in the making.
Any advice to other business owners on running a successful business?
We’re not going to lie- there is no magic formula. Its bloody hard work. Actual blood, sweat and tears.
You need a balance of strong leadership, commitment, tenacity, perseverance, creativity, passion and empathy. Focus on building a brand. Not a business.
We genuinely believe that the creative is the variable to your success. It’s not necessarily about being better - you have to find your point of difference and let your brand personality shine.
