BHR Papalia are proud to partner with numerous local businesses who are excelling in their industries and making an impact on their communities. This month we would like to spotlight The Good Earth Surf Shop, a surfing supplies store that has become a cultural hub and popular destination at the heart of Bunbury.
Tell us about the Good Earth Surf Shop?
The Good Earth Surf Shop started out in 1973 as a combination of surfing supplies and natural foods. Over the years, it evolved into a dedicated surf shop specialising in bodyboarding, and is now an Aladdin’s cave of surf supplies, swimwear, music and art that has become an iconic Bunbury destination.
Zena and Darren Hotker took over Good Earth seven years ago.
“We have made the shop into a surf destination for all surf gear in and out of the water,” Zena said. The couple brought further diversity to the business a year ago by introducing Good Vibes Vinyl, a permanent vinyl record store within the surf shop.
What do BHR Papalia do for you?
BHR Papalia have helped with Zena and Darren’s accounting and tax needs since they first began in small business.
“The team have been a great help in making the accounting part of the business not so stressful,” Zena said.
What are some of the highlights of the past year, or big wins you have had?
Good Earth’s biggest highlight over the past year has been seeing the business grow into a destination rather than just a retail store.
“Since we’ve added the vinyl records and a funky place to hang and listen to music, we have increased foot traffic and introduced new people into the store,” Zena said.
The Good Earth Surf Shop has also transformed for the last few years into a theatre venue during Bunbury Fringe Festival.
“Fringe has been a fantastic event for Bunbury,” Zena said.
“We loved seeing our back warehouse being transformed into an awesome venue, with some great acts performing.”
