Sharon said she enjoyed getting her teeth into problems and solving them for the clients.
“One of our clients was on the brink of closing their doors, however we’ve been able to work with them to keep the doors open, make some changes and implement systems,” she said. “Hopefully in six months time they’ll be seeing the other side of that and come out smiling. That’s what we’d like to see. It’s about giving work life balance back to the clients. Sometimes we take the work on ourselves, or sometimes we help to streamline their day and internal processes. A good entrepreneur or successful business owner surrounds themselves with people who are experts at what they do - and they spend their time doing what they do best.”
A bookkeeper's job has a lot of scope, and there are a few things that our clients may not be aware of that our team can do for them – like call on them as back up when people are on holidays, help out with a review and implement changes to their internal systems, and carry out routine work on site.
There are challenges to the job too, many of which revolve around embracing new systems.
“Many clients want change, but they can be hesitant to embrace new technology,” Lara said. "So it's our role to show them how to do it effectively. We minimise the chaos and implement positive change."
“There are a lot of add-ons and systems which can help our clients, which means we’ve got to expose ourselves to them and keep abreast of it first,” Sharon said.
That said, our team have a few favourite programs and apps that help keep things running efficiently.
Nichelle said her favourite was Receipt Bank, an app that automates some of the bookkeeping process and streamlines the data entry.
Sharon said she loved using Xero, because it removed the need for manual data processing and was easy to teach clients to use.
“It’s the best cloud-based accounting software,” she said.
Jackie added that Xero removed the need for paper copies of documents.
“Kounta is a great point of sale system for cafes and restaurants,” Lara said. “It has a good integration into Xero.”
Our bookkeeping team work side by side with BHR’s accounting team, and are able to add extra value to what we do.
“We’re a resource that the accountants get to use too,” Sharon said. “They get a lot of questions from clients on how to do things, and the accountants can refer clients straight onto us as experts, knowing we’re going to be able to help them further. We do the same, and can double check things with the accountants. We all support each other.”
